FEATURE: The Bamford Monaco - Personalisation or Vandalism?

I came across a website yesterday for a company in Guildford who specialise in selling pre-owned luxury watches, and among the various items available for sale I saw this 'Bamford' Monaco. Of course I've heard of Bamford before, but I thought they only really customised Rolex watches... apparently not! Strangely enough I was looking at the Bamford website the other day and I must admit I do like some of their designs, especially because I rather like black and bright green together and there aren't that many luxury watches that offer this colour scheme. Not terribly surprising perhaps, but every single watch on the site was 'POA' and I'm pretty sure that I couldn't afford any of them even if I wanted one, but it got me thinking about this whole 'customisation' thing and more specifically 'third party' customisation. Some of you may have seen Armin Strom's new watch range where the customer can personalise various elements of the watch...

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Carrera Calibre 16 Chronograph

CV2A84.FC6394 Wow, so here we have a Carrera on a brown leather strap, so this is only going one way right? Well, not so fast... because actually, I don't mind this one. It reminds me of a Timex I used to have many years ago (back in the days when I used to buy my wrist-watches from Argos - I know, the shame of it...). It was either called an Explorer or an Expedition or something else beginning with E that made it sound rugged and manly, and truth be told it looked nothing like this Carrera, but it did have a suede/leather type strap and at the time I really liked it. Not actually sure what happened to it, probably fell to bits like the Citizen I had after it... But anyway, I think this is rather smart and reminds me of that new Aquaracer with the brown nylon strap... ...a watch incidentally, which looks a million times better once you get it off that daft nylon thing and put it on black rubber. In fact now that I've seen it on black rubber I am sorely tempted to buy one, wer...

ON THE WRIST: Carrera Calibre 16 White Dial Chronograph

CV2A11.BA0796 TAG Heuer Boutique / Bicester Village, 27th July 2018 I've always really liked the Carreras with the 'minute' numerals, but when they are placed on a black dial they do have a tendency to disappear as they reflect the black in their polished surfaces. One way to resolve the problem is to have a white dial and that's exactly what we have here... and it's a bit of a stunner to say the least. There's nothing overly remarkable about the watch in general, it's a 43mm case, with a Calibre 16 movement as you'd expect and have seen in countless other Carreras. But that combination of white dial and minute markers really works well and gives this one a modern feeling that eludes a lot of Carreras. Now I'm sure this won't be everyone's cup of tea because a lot of Carrera fans would rather they didn't have a modern feeling at all, but there's many, many Carreras out there for those people, and it's nice that this one is a littl...
